The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Julian Bedel founded Fueguia 1833 in 2010 in Argentina, drawing inspiration from the medicinal plants of Patagonia and the tactile memory of vintage travel. In 2019, Bedel created Oud Ambar, a composition that takes its name from the golden warmth of amber and the deep richness of oud. Rather than constructing a fragrance around traditional opening-heart-base architecture, Bedel chose to eliminate the Opening Phase entirely, allowing the heart notes to arrive and persist as the complete experience. The name Oud Ambar reflects this directness: two materials, two words, one honest description of what the wearer will feel.
The choice to build Oud Ambar around only amber and oud reflects a specific philosophy within Fueguia 1833: that each fragrance should feel like a single coherent thought rather than a multi-part narrative. Amber offers warmth, sweetness, and a natural connection to resins and time. Oud offers depth, smokiness, and an almost meditative quality. Tog ether, they create a fragrance that is simultaneously comforting and contemplative. Bedel has stated in brand materials that limited production and botanical authenticity are central to the Fueguia 1833 identity, and Oud Ambar honors both by using materials that speak clearly and without decoration.
The evolution
The evolution of Oud Ambar is deliberate in its simplicity. Without an opening phase, the fragrance begins where most fragrances enter their heart stage. Amber and oud arrive tog ether, immediately creating a warm and slightly smoky environment. The amber adds a honeyed, resinous quality while the oud provides depth that prevents the composition from becoming purely sweet. Over the first several hours, the two notes remain in dialogue, neither dominant nor subordinate. As time passes into the drydown, the amber loses some potency and becomes dustier, while the oud settles into a quieter smoky murmur. The trajectory is not a dramatic arc but a slow, steady deepening followed by a gentle fade, holding the listener in the same register throughout.
Cultural impact
Wearers often describe Águila de Ámbar as the scent of a quiet Patagonian sunrise that carries a hint of distant wilderness, making it a favorite for those who value understated elegance over flash. It has been noted in niche forums as a modern take on classic amber‑oud pairings, standing alongside the house’s Oud Jungle (2022) as a signature resinous expression.
