The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pisces is the dreamer's wave in French Avenue's Genesis collection. Named for the twelfth sign of the zodiac, the fragrance takes its cue from the emotional depth and intuitive pull of those born under it. The brief was simple: build something that moves like water but doesn't drift. Shinichiro Oba worked with Margarita, blackcurrant, and cardamom to create that tension between soft and sharp, the way the sea looks gentle from shore but pulls hard once you're in. The Genesis line at French Avenue is where the house takes its more conceptual turns, and Pisces is its most introspective statement yet.
What makes this composition interesting is the Margarita accord as a structural choice. It's not a cocktail note in the obvious sense, but rather a calculated balance of citrus brightness and salt that gives the opening its signature. Blackcurrant adds a tart fruitiness that could easily tip into candy, but cardamom keeps it grounded in something warmer and more complex. The pairing of juniper and ginger in the heart is a classic fresh-spicy move, but it earns its place here because it transitions the fragrance from bright to grounded without losing momentum. This is a composition that knows what it wants to be and doesn't apologize for it.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to the Margarita. Bright, almost sparkling, with blackcurrant peeking through the citrus like a berry hiding in a cocktail glass. Cardamom arrives quietly, a warmth that builds rather than announces. Around the thirty-minute mark, juniper takes over, and the scent shifts from fruity-sparkling to something cleaner, greener, more austere. Ginger lingers longer than expected, a clean heat that carries through the heart. By the second hour, the base notes begin to surface: vetiver first, earthy and cool, then patchouli settling in beneath. Tonka bean softens the edges, adding a subtle sweetness that prevents the drydown from going too dry. On most skin, this lasts eight to ten hours. The sillage is moderate but present, the kind that someone notices only when they lean in.
Cultural impact
Pisces enters a market that has grown more interested in zodiac and astrological branding for luxury goods. The Genesis collection positions itself as French Avenue's more introspective line, and this fragrance leans into that with a composition that rewards attention rather than demanding it. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who moves through a room without needing to announce themselves.
