The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Match is a fragrance by Der Duft created by perfumer Anne-Sophie Behaghel. The scent centers on cedar as its primary material, with suede and ambroxan providing structure and softness. The name references the match as in a box of matches, evoking dry wood and the tactile quality of cardboard. Notes of cumin add an unexpected warmth to the composition, while Karmawood grounds the fragrance with depth. The overall effect is woody and intimate, a scent that settles close to the skin rather than projecting outward.
The note structure is deceptively simple on paper. Cedar, black pepper, sandalwood, vetiver. But the way these materials interact is where Behaghel's hand shows. Black pepper and ginger open bright and prickling, keeping the woods from becoming static. Grapefruit adds a brief citrus honesty, a reminder that this started somewhere with light and air. Then the cedar takes over and the fragrance becomes what it was always going to be: warm, woody, intimate. The addition of iris butter and suede in the heart gives the composition a powdery softness that rounds edges the spices might otherwise leave sharp.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly: grapefruit zest and black pepper spice arrive together, the ginger adding clean heat that prickles rather than burns. Within fifteen minutes the citrus fades and the woody architecture reveals itself, cedar and sandalwood forming a warm center that doesn't rush. The vetiver appears around the thirty-minute mark, its earthiness anchoring what could have been a purely aesthetic fragrance and giving it weight. The heart lasts for hours. Cedarwood, suede, and iris butter settle into a powdery-soft warmth that projects moderately, noticeable to someone close, invisible to someone across the room. The drydown is the payoff. Seven or eight hours in, the suede and ambroxan take over, giving the fragrance a skin-like quality that doesn't so much linger as become inseparable from the wearer. That's when Match stops being a fragrance and becomes something closer to a memory of one.
Cultural impact
Match occupies a distinctive space in the niche fragrance landscape, appealing to those who appreciate woodsy compositions with depth. The cumin note adds a specific character that sets it apart from more conventional choices. Reviewers note the fragrance as something worth considering carefully, a scent that rewards attention rather than demanding it. For fragrance enthusiasts seeking something outside the mainstream, Match presents itself as a noteworthy option.
