The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of Damask Haus's Silent Night Collection, Boughs of Holly arrived in 2022 as perfumer Bri Beyer's take on something most holiday fragrances dodge: the actual plant. No abstraction here, no sugared plum pretending to be a fireplace. The brief was botanical, green, alive. This composition reads like the opening paragraph of a winter chapter, with holly leaf and holly berry carrying structural weight rather than serving as garnish. That commitment to the plant matters because most holiday compositions chase warmth through smoke and sugar and spices, burying any green note under a blanket of holiday shorthand. The result here feels like December distilled rather than December sentimentalized, a composition for anyone who wants the season on their skin with all its cold edges intact.
Holly leaf and holly berry occupy a strange corner of perfumery, rarely treated as more than accent in compositions built around warmer materials. Pairing them with blackberry adds a second layer of unpredictability, tart fruit with a dusky, wine-dark edge that cuts against the leaf's bitter green snap. Sage contributes a herbal dryness that keeps jasmine from drifting into creaminess, pinning it instead to a more austere register.
The evolution
The opening hits cold and green before anything fruity registers, holly leaf and sage doing the work of a December wind. Within the first ten minutes, jasmine threads through, creamy enough to soften the bitter edges without burying them, and blackberry begins to seep in at the corners, offering that wine-dark fruit note without announcing itself. The heart holds this tension for the better part of two hours: green versus floral versus dark fruit, all three refusing to win. The drydown is where the holly berry notes make their move, leaving a faint sweet-metallic trace that lingers on skin into the next morning, more memory than statement. The sillage sits close to the skin, a personal wreath rather than a broadcast, and the longevity holds comfortably into the evening before fading into skin warmth and the ghost of green.
Cultural impact
Boughs of Holly arrived in 2022 as part of Damask Haus's Silent Night Collection, notable for how literally it interprets a winter botanical. Rather than working through abstraction, the composition centers on holly flower, holly leaf, and holly berry, pairing that green backbone with blackberry and jasmine in a layered structure. The willingness to keep the bitter, leafy character intact sets the composition apart from holiday work that sweetens its greens into background decoration.
