The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maria arrived in 2018, a Kuwaiti release from CZAR Fragrances, one of the brand's named compositions. The name belongs to CZAR's House of Romanov collection, a series that trades in regal, almost mythic portraiture. Maria fits that mood: opulent, a little theatrical, built around cherry as the protagonist. The cherry note arrives with a sweetness that feels almost candied at first spray, a bright jammy lift that catches the air and holds it for a beat before settling. There's a syrupy quality to it, like reduced fruit syrup cooled just enough to pour. The composition reads as gourmand through and through, with a confectionary warmth that softens into something denser as the hours pass.
What's interesting about Maria is the choice to build a unisex fragrance around cherry and blueberry, two notes that carry their own sweetness without any floral buffer between them and the skin. CZAR didn't soften the fruit with rose or jasmine. Instead, the base is patchouli and musk, materials with gravity, which keeps the sweetness from tipping into childish territory. The vanilla arrives not as a sugar-bomb finish but as a warm undertone, almost skin-like. The patchouli grounds the syrupy fruit with something earthy and slightly bitter, like the smell of damp bark under a fruit tree.
The evolution
The opening is loud in its cherry-blueberry sweetness, the kind of fruit that announces itself across a room. For the first 20 minutes, it feels almost like a candy shop, bright, sticky, unapologetic. Then the transition begins. The fruit doesn't disappear so much as get dusted: the musk and patchouli start pulling it toward something drier, more textured, like the sweetness has been left out overnight. The blueberry note recedes first, melting into the cherry rather than standing apart, and what remains is a darker, more concentrated fruit impression, somewhere between jam and dried fruit leather. By the two-hour mark the vanilla takes over, warm and close, and the whole thing settles into a soft, skin-adjacent warmth.
Cultural impact
Maria is part of CZAR's House of Romanov collection, a series that leans into grand, portrait-style naming and fruit-driven compositions. The cherry-vanilla combination at the heart of Maria anchors the scent in a familiar gourmand territory, but the patchouli and musk in the base give it a weight that keeps it from reading as purely sweet. The fruit notes carry the opening with an almost confectionary brightness, and the warmer base notes carry the drydown into something more intimate and skin-close.
