The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 1934, CARON released Pour Un Homme, the first men's fragrance in history. Ninety years later, the house returned to that founding premise with Le Matin, a contemporary reimagining built for the modern morning. Jean Jacques, the house perfumer, approached the project with the goal of connecting to the original creation's character. The result is Pour Un Homme de Caron Le Matin, a fragrance that draws from the house's heritage while speaking to today's sensibilities. The structure of the scent reflects a deliberate evolution, one that takes the foundational elements of the 1934 original and reconsiders them through a modern lens.
What makes Le Matin distinct is the CO2 ginger extract. This extraction method uses carbon dioxide under pressure to pull aromatic compounds from plant material, capturing a different profile than traditional approaches. Jean Jacques paired it with Provençal lavandin grown at low altitude from traceable sources, a deliberate choice that gives the lavender note a particular character. The combination produces a freshness that feels grounded and specific, drawing from the qualities of the ingredients rather than relying on synthetic alternatives.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp: Italian bergamot and lemon petitgrain give way to a cool Provençal lavender that reads clean without being clinical. Nigerian ginger CO2 adds a warmth underneath, the spice of a morning just beginning. The geranium introduces a softening effect as the fragrance develops, moving what could have been sharp into a soapy, rounded register. The drydown belongs to the oakmoss and guaiac wood, with the base notes providing structure and depth. As the scent progresses through its wear, the sillage moves closer to the skin, becoming intimate rather than projecting outward. The patchouli leaf contributes warmth that carries through the fragrance's final stages.
Cultural impact
Pour Un Homme de Caron Le Matin arrives as a continuation of a story that began in 1934. The original Pour Un Homme represented an early statement in men's fragrance, one that established the house's commitment to masculine scents. Le Matin takes the foundational approach of that original and introduces modern materials, including CO2 ginger extraction, to create a scent that reflects contemporary perfumery while maintaining connection to the house's history.
