The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Atelier des Ors, founded in Grasse in 2015 by Jean-Philippe Clermont, has built its identity around the symbolism of gold. For this house, gold represents luminosity and permanence rather than mere warmth. Marie Salamagne, the house's signature perfumer, brings a refined architectural approach to every composition. With Novae Vanilla, she takes a familiar material and strips away expectation, using mineral notes and mimosa to challenge how vanilla is perceived. The goal is not comfort but intrigue, not sweetness alone but structure and light.
The choice of mineral notes in the opening is not accidental. Salamagne uses them to create what might be described as an olfactory pause, a moment of clarity before richness arrives. Mimosa adds an understated elegance that prevents the fragrance from feeling purely gourmand. At the base, amberwood and musk ensure the composition remains grounded. The result is a vanilla fragrance that asks the wearer to pay attention, to notice the contrast between cool and warm, between fleeting mineral crispness and lasting creamy depth. This is not a comfort scent; it is a conversation.
The evolution
The journey of Novae Vanilla begins with mineral notes that feel almost surprising against the vanilla that follows. This cold, crystalline opening creates an immediate contrast with the creamy heart that arrives within minutes. Mimosa adds a powdery, golden quality during the transition, bridging the gap between cool and warm. As Bourbon Vanilla fully emerges, the heart becomes rich and almost tactile. The drydown gradually introduces amberwood, which wraps around the vanilla like a warm blanket, while musk keeps everything close to the skin. The evolution feels deliberate, each stage offering something distinct before merging into a cohesive whole.
Cultural impact
Recent vanilla releases have trended toward skin-close warmth and gourmand reinterpretations. Novae Vanilla moves in a different direction, mineral freshness as the surprise element, stellar rather than cozy. Compared to Vanille Antique by Byredo or Vanilla Powder by Matière Première, it occupies different territory: cooler, more angular, with the mineral accords creating distance that most vanillas don't attempt.
