Why it exists.
The beginning
Baccvs joins the Dionisiac Collection at Amaranthvs Herbis. Vincent Gambino composed Baccvs in 2020, working with a palette that pulls equally from spiced warmth and slow-developing sweetness. The name points directly at Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, revelry, and intoxication, and the composition behaves accordingly. Spice, spirits, honey, and cacao are arranged like a tray of after-dinner offerings, each material invited to contribute texture rather than compete for attention. Star anise opens with a sharp, almost medicinal clarity, lifting the composition before the heavier materials have time to settle. Nutmeg warms the mid-ground, threading through the opening with a grounded, familiar heat that steadies the anise's brightness.
What makes the construction interesting is the interplay between aromatics and gourmand elements without crossing into obvious dessert territory. Star anise and nutmeg drive the opening, but cognac and rum anchor the warmth rather than letting vanilla or caramel do all the work. Karo Karounde, a less common white floral, threads through the heart alongside gardenia, adding a creamy pollen quality that softens the spice. The base layers benzoin, styrax, and leather into a resinous conclusion, while sandalwood and patchouli provide the woody substructure. This is a composition that knows restraint matters more than abundance.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are the boldest statement. Star anise leads, bright and almost medicinal, with nutmeg warming underneath and a clear thread of juniper lending a gin-like coolness. Cognac arrives fast, followed by rum and honey, which begin to sweeten the architecture within the first hour. The honey reads as warm and ambered rather than sugary, bridging the boozy opening with what comes later. Around the ninety-minute mark, the white florals (Karo Karounde and gardenia) make a brief appearance, catching the light between spice and sweetness before quietly stepping back. Their presence is fleeting but intentional, a soft floral hinge that prevents the composition from tipping entirely into gourmand territory.
Cultural impact
Baccvs arrives from a house that resists easy categorization, and the composition reflects that. It rewards attention rather than demanding it, settling into its structure slowly enough that the wearer discovers each layer in turn. The spice and sweetness share the same register, neither one overwhelming the other, and the result reads as deliberate rather than ornamental.
