The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Art Deco 1 arrived in 2019 as part of Alexandre.J's Atelier d'Artistes collection, the maison line of artistic references rendered in scent. The Art Deco collection, of which this fragrance is a part, was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Art Deco movement, translating that heritage into something wearable. The composition opens with a bright, sparkling accord built on aldehydes and citrus, including bergamot, lemon, and orange, lifted further by green mandarin and orange blossom. It reads immediately fresh, almost weightless, the sensation of clean air moving through a sunlit room. The maison has built a reputation on treating each release as an artistic object, where presentation and composition share equal importance.
What separates Art Deco 1 from the crowded aldehydic-cologne category is the base architecture. Most aldehydic compositions chase the bright opening and leave the wearer there. This one pivots hard into a woody-amber foundation built on cedar, patchouli, cashmeran, and amberwood, with vanilla threading warmth through the entire structure. The base notes carry real weight, and they anchor the airy top in a way that gives the fragrance longevity and presence.
The evolution
The opening belongs to aldehydes and citrus, and they arrive with purpose. There's an immediate brightness that reads clean and effervescent, the kind of effervescent quality that announces itself without shouting. The aldehyde and citrus accord clears the air around it, and while that initial burst softens as the minutes pass, it leaves behind a trace of its clean-linen character. From there, the composition shifts into its woody phase. Cedar and patchouli take over, and cashmeran adds a dry softness between them. The patchouli here is present but controlled, giving the heart a quiet authority. By the later hours, amberwood and vanilla settle into the base alongside white musk, and the whole thing gets quieter and warmer. The sillage pulls in close in the later stages of wear, but the scent itself holds on skin for hours, and even longer on fabric.
Cultural impact
Art Deco 1 by Alexandre.J carries the brand's Art Deco visual identity directly into scent, and the fragrance leans hard into that aesthetic, translating decorative geometry and optimism into a wearable composition. The brand has long positioned its releases as artistic references rendered in fragrance, and Art Deco 1 was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Art Deco movement, grounding the launch in a specific cultural moment. The fragrance carries that celebratory spirit forward, treating zest as ornament rather than afterthought.
