The Story
Why it exists.
Old Fashioned takes its name from the classic cocktail, but Kilian Hennessy had something more specific in mind: the complex taste structure of an 18-year-aged single malt from Scottish tradition. He wanted to capture the moment when whiskey becomes something more than alcohol, when time, wood, and temperature transform raw spirit into something nuanced and alive. Working with perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur, Hennessy translated that into scent: wheat absolute for the grain, davana for a slightly floral liquored quality, whiskey accord for the spirit itself, and then cedar, immortelle, tolu balm, and styrax for the warmth of the barrel.

The Beginning
What makes Old Fashioned distinctive is the way it handles the whiskey accord, not as a novelty or a single note, but as a structural element that runs through the entire composition. The wheat absolute opens the fragrance with an earthy, grain-like quality that grounds the booziness in something tangible. Then the immortelle absolute adds a herbal, slightly honeyed complexity that prevents the composition from becoming too linear. The combination of tolu balm and styrax in the base creates a resinous, slightly smoky drydown that evokes the inside of a cask without tipping into campfire territory. It's whisky as atmosphere, present throughout, never overwhelming, eventually taking over.
The Evolution
Old Fashioned opens with wheat and davana, a grain-forward, slightly floral brightness that reads more like a distillery than a bar. The bergamot adds a citrus lift that keeps the opening from becoming heavy. Within 30 minutes, the heart begins to assert itself: cedarwood and immortelle absolute create a complex herbal-woody structure, while the whiskey accord deepens the boozy quality. The orange blossom and tuberose add a subtle floral counterpoint that prevents the composition from becoming too masculine. By the second hour, the base notes take over, tolu balm and styrax create a resinous, slightly smoky drydown that feels like standing in an old warehouse where the barrels have been aging for decades. The longevity is impressive, 8-10 hours on most skin types, with the drydown remaining close to the skin rather than projecting aggressively. The next day, there's a faint trace of resin and wood on fabric, the ghost of a glass that was emptied long ago.
Cultural Impact
Old Fashioned is a whisky-inspired fragrance that translates spirit heritage into wearable form. The boozy composition avoids the heavy, waxy quality that can plague spirit-themed fragrances, instead capturing the lighter, more ethereal qualities of whiskey. It smells like the memory of a drink rather than the drink itself, a subtle distinction that elevates it above novelty fragrances in this category.
