Heritage
A house, in its own words
Waters + Wild emerged from a deeply personal connection to the rugged coastline and pastoral interior of West Cork, in the south of Ireland. The brand's founder, Jo Madden, left a career in pharmaceutical and natural product formulation to pursue what she describes as a lifelong fascination with scent and its connection to memory and landscape. Working from a studio in the Beara peninsula region, Madden began developing the brand's inaugural perfume line in 2016, releasing Tuberose + Frankincense, Rose + Oud, and Cedarwood + Cognac as the founding trio. The following year brought Sweet Basil + Bergamot, expanding the catalogue and signaling the brand's commitment to working with both floral and aromatic herbaceous materials. The studio's setting, surrounded by Atlantic coastline, hedgerows, and old-growth forest, informs not only the scent palette but the rhythm of production. Bottles are filled in editions tied to seasonal harvests of wild and organic raw materials, meaning availability shifts with the growing cycle rather than a conventional retail calendar. Over time the line has grown to include organic skincare, botanical mists, and a curated selection of sustainable goods from independent makers who share the brand's environmental values. The house remains independently owned and operated from its West Cork base, with no corporate parent or third-party investors guiding its direction. At its core, Waters + Wild operates on the principle that what goes onto the skin matters as much as what goes into the air. The brand commits to 100% natural and certified organic ingredients, excluding all synthetic musks, phthalates, parabens, and artificial colorants from every formulation. This is a perfumery built on transparency rather than mystique: ingredient lists are published openly, and sourcing details are shared for each botanical. The creative vision pairs Irish landscape imagery with classical perfumery structure, allowing materials like frankincense and oud to appear alongside more unexpected choices like cognac accord and sweet basil. Sustainability runs through every operational decision, from packaging choices to supply chain relationships with small organic farms and wild-harvesters. Rather than chasing trend-driven fragrance categories, the studio focuses on building a tight, considered catalogue where each composition earns its place. The result is a brand that treats perfumery as a form of botanical stewardship, not just an aesthetic exercise.
