The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Viktor&Rolf has built a fragrance portfolio that thrives on theatrical contrast. Flowerbomb explosively changed the concept of sweet fragrances, while Spicebomb pushed the logic of spices to its limits. The 2021 Infrared version continues this tradition, but this time the goal is not explosiveness, but sustained heat. Carlos Benaïm, in collaboration with Nicolas Beaulieu and Jean-Christophe Hérault, conceived a fragrance that makes you feel the temperature from the very first moment. Their premise is simple: infrared is invisible heat, but it can definitely be felt. This idea of invisible but perceptible heat drove the entire creative process.
The choice of spices reflects the brand's dedication to contrast. Cinnamon and red pepper provide the opening stimulation, while chili adds a layer of spicy tingling. Chili is a core ingredient, its selection intentional, its fruity sweetness combined with fiery heat creating a unique olfactory signature. Woody notes and leather are used as anchors, transforming all the heat into a wearable experience. This arc from extreme heat to quiet composure is the core philosophy of Infrared. The fruity sweetness of the habanero chili creates a captivating contrast with its fiery spice, making this fragrance both vibrant and balanced.
The evolution
The evolution of the fragrance tells a story of heat gradually escalating and then slowly fading. Upon opening, the combination of cinnamon, red pepper, and chili immediately creates a tingling sensation, warming the skin. This is intentional, with no gradual introduction, just a direct impact. Over time, the chili heart takes over, pushing the heat to its peak. After several hours, woody notes begin to emerge, followed closely by leather, transforming the fiery intensity into a quieter, more enduring presence. Eventually, only a faint trace of the woody and leather blend remains on the skin, a calm after a long, hot day. The overall trajectory of the fragrance showcases the brand's precise control over temperature changes, from the initial impact to the final lingering warmth, every step meticulously designed.
Cultural impact
Spicebomb Infrared occupies a specific corner of the market. Since its 2021 launch, it has found a dedicated audience among men who want something with clear character. The fragrance sits alongside others in the Spicebomb family but carves its own space through that tobacco-benzoin drydown, which wearers consistently cite as what keeps them coming back. The warmth comes from the tobacco, the softness from the benzoin, and together they create something that feels both familiar and specific to this particular formulation.
