Heritage
A house, in its own words
Laurie Stern established Velvet & Sweet Pea's Purrfumery in 2005, naming her craft after the feline companions who share her studio. The brand emerged during the early years of the indie perfume revival, when a small number of perfumers began挑战 convention by creating natural fragrances outside the commercial fragrance industry. Stern's background in natural materials positioned her to capitalize on growing consumer interest in botanical perfumery before the clean beauty movement gained mainstream traction. Her first documented fragrance, Jewelry of Heaven, appeared in 2006 and signaled her preference for evocative, narrative-driven scent titles. Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, she released multiple perfumes annually, including the rose-forward Bed of Roses (2010), the green Fir-ever Young (2010), and the gourmand Fleur de Caramel (2012). The brand maintained its independent status throughout the 2010s, continuing to expand its collection with releases like The Moon & the Stars (2015), Highway (2017), and Luminous Lemurs (2020). By the early 2020s, Velvet & Sweet Pea's Purrfumery had established itself as a sustained presence in the natural perfume community, releasing Beaumes de Cassis in 2023. Laurie Stern operates Velvet & Sweet Pea's Purrfumery with a conviction that natural materials produce superior olfactory experiences. She formulates exclusively with botanical ingredients, avoiding synthetic compounds entirely, and maintains that plants offer enough complexity to create compelling, layered fragrances. Her cruelty-free commitment ensures no animal testing occurs at any production stage. The brand's identity draws explicit inspiration from Stern's cats, who serve as literal muses and appear throughout the brand's storytelling and visual presentation. This cat-centric approach extends to the perfume names themselves, with titles like Luminous Lemurs and Fir-ever Young demonstrating playful nomenclature. Stern positions herself as both artist and educator, regularly sharing her perspective on natural perfumery through her YouTube channel and social media presence. The brand's community engagement suggests Stern values direct relationships with fragrance enthusiasts over traditional retail distribution.
