Heritage
A house, in its own words
Van Gils originated as a Dutch menswear brand founded by Hermiel van Gils. The company built its reputation in the Netherlands through tailored clothing before expanding into fragrances during the 1980s. This move into personal scent products marked a natural extension of the brand's focus on masculine style and self-presentation. The first Van Gils fragrance launched in 1988, establishing the brand in the fragrance market. Following this debut, the company continued developing its scent portfolio with releases spaced across subsequent decades. Basic Instinct arrived in 2002, followed by Her Aura in 2006, Live in 2013, Elite in 2016, Van Gils I in 2018, I For All in 2021, and Strictly No.01 in 2024. This timeline demonstrates consistent activity in fragrance development over more than three decades, with the brand building a collection that reflects its identity as a lifestyle company rooted in Dutch menswear traditions.
The Van Gils approach to fragrance centers on translating the brand's menswear identity into personal scent. Rather than pursuing novelty for its own sake, each fragrance release builds on the foundation established by previous ones. This creates a collection that feels cohesive rather than scattered across unrelated concepts. The brand favors a measured approach to development, introducing new fragrances at a deliberate pace rather than flooding the market with constant releases. Fragrance direction appears shaped by the same values that define the clothing line: straightforward, quality-focused, and anchored in masculine sensibility. The brand does not chase fleeting trends in perfumery. Instead, Van Gils fragrances tend toward established scent profiles that align with the brand's heritage. This philosophy results in a portfolio that prioritizes consistency and longevity over constant reinvention. Each new release represents an evolution rather than a departure from what came before.
