Heritage
A house, in its own words
Marcus Wainwright and David Neville founded rag & bone in 2002 with a focus on masterfully constructed clothing. Both founders brought different backgrounds to the venture, with Wainwright reportedly studying at the University of Exeter before pursuing design, and Neville having experience in the fashion industry. The label grew from a small operation into a recognized ready-to-wear brand, gaining traction for its blend of British heritage tailoring traditions and contemporary New York sensibility. By the time the brand entered fragrance, it had established retail presence and a distinct identity in the competitive fashion market. The move into beauty marked a significant expansion beyond apparel, representing the label's first foray into a new category. Industry publication WWD reported on the fragrance launch as a notable business development for the young brand. The timing of entering perfumery in 2016 positioned rag & bone among the wave of fashion labels expanding into beauty during that period.
Wainwright approached fragrance creation with the understanding that a single signature scent would not capture the brand's multifaceted identity. Instead, the label developed multiple distinct fragrances that could appeal to different preferences and occasions. The brand philosophy centers on wearability and modern character, creating scents suited for everyday use rather than occasional wear. The decision to launch gender-neutral compositions reflected contemporary attitudes toward fragrance, rejecting traditional marketing categories that segment scents by gender. Wainwright reportedly recognized that fragrance preferences are deeply personal, which informed the strategy of offering multiple options rather than imposing a singular olfactory identity. The brand's approach to fragrance mirrors its clothing philosophy: functional, well-made pieces that serve the wearer without unnecessary complexity. Each scent aims to provide a distinct sensory experience while maintaining the restraint and sophistication associated with the rag & bone aesthetic.
