A house, in its own words
The story of Panouge begins in the mid-twentieth century, when the company operated under the name Parfums Lavernne. Founded reportedly in 1946, the house specialized in the trading and evaluation of essential oils from origins worldwide, building a reputation as a trusted supplier within the fragrance industry. This foundational expertise in raw aromatic materials gave the company an unusual position in the perfume world, one closer to the source than most finished-goods brands. The company later adopted the name Panouge, which it carries today. Over the following decades, Panouge Group established itself as a behind-the-scenes player, supplying fragrance materials while quietly developing its own perfume creations. The group reportedly expanded its presence to more than 85 countries, serving both industry clients and, eventually, retail consumers directly. In 2014, Panouge Paris was launched as a dedicated consumer-facing brand, bringing the group's accumulated knowledge of aromatic materials to a wider audience through finished fragrances. This dual identity, as both supplier and creator, distinguishes Panouge from houses that entered perfumery through fashion or cosmetics. The group's longevity reflects a sustained focus on material quality and olfactory expertise rather than marketing-driven growth.
Panouge approaches perfumery from the perspective of the raw material specialist. Where many houses begin with a concept or marketing brief, Panouge starts with the properties and possibilities of aromatic ingredients. This orientation shapes the group's creative process, emphasizing the character and quality of individual materials rather than trend-driven formulations. The philosophy prioritizes olfactory authenticity, building fragrances around materials that can be traced to specific origins and extraction methods. Panouge's perfumers reportedly work closely with the group's trading division, selecting from a range of essential oils and aromatic compounds to construct their compositions. This integration of supplier and creator allows for a level of ingredient control that larger fragrance houses often lack. The brand's offerings tend toward bold, material-forward scents rather than minimalist or concept-driven work. The group appears less concerned with aligning to prevailing fashion trends than with producing fragrances that showcase the breadth of what aromatic materials can achieve. This approach positions Panouge as a house for those who prioritize ingredient integrity and olfactory depth over trend compliance.
