The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Simon Constantine designed SOS around a single conviction: simplicity can carry weight. Launched in 2019, the fragrance distills two materials into their most direct expression, Sumatran patchouli and Brazilian orange, nothing more. The patchouli brings an earthy, grounded quality while the orange adds brightness and warmth, each note holding its own character without trying to become something more elaborate. Sometimes the most urgent thing a perfumer can do is get out of the way.
What makes this composition work is the interplay between the two materials. Patchouli carries a natural earthiness that can tip into mustiness on the wrong skin, and the Brazilian orange introduces a bright, warm counterpoint that keeps the overall feel from becoming heavy. It's a study in restraint, no unnecessary embellishment, no blended accord trying to be something it isn't. Just two materials, honestly presented, each allowing the other to exist without compromise.
The evolution
The opening makes its statement immediately. Dry, earthy patchouli asserts itself first, grounded and unapologetic. Then the Brazilian orange arrives, bright and warm, offering contrast without overwhelming the earthiness that came before. The two notes coexist without one dominating the other. As time passes, the patchouli settles into something softer, creamier, taking on a warmer quality as the orange gradually recedes. The drydown stays close to the skin, intimate and persistent, the kind of scent that reveals itself to those standing nearby.
Cultural impact
SOS occupies an unusual position in Lush's lineup: a fragrance defined by its minimalism. In a market where many scents chase complexity, a two-note composition can feel almost radical in its simplicity. The limited-edition status has kept it from becoming everywhere, which reinforces its appeal: wearing SOS means wearing something with a certain exclusivity. It appeals to wearers drawn to scents that do not try to do everything at once, offering instead a focused, honest experience.
