The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is borrowed. A 2019 work by Julien, a piece spanning performance, film, and photography, examined the creative act itself, the way artistic processes entangle and inform one another. That became the brief: not a scene, not a memory, but the sensation of creation in motion. Vasnier translated it into olfactory form, using mineral freshness and floral notes as the two opposing materials in dialogue. The entanglement isn't metaphorical here, it's structural. Two completely different fragrance languages forced into the same space.
Two note families. Floral and mineral. That's the entire pyramid. In conventional perfumery, minerals usually sit in aquatic or fresh fragrances alongside marine notes, citrus, or ozonics. Florals live in an entirely different world, warm, romantic, heady. Here, Vasnier bridges them directly, without the usual mediating accords. The result is a fragrance that behaves unlike most florals: the mineral freshness pushes against the petals, keeping them cooler and sharper than expected, while the florals prevent the minerals from reading as cold or clinical. The tension is the point.
The evolution
The opening hits mineral first, clean, dry, almost clinical. Not soapy exactly, but crisp in a way that feels abstract rather than natural. There's a sharpness to it, a kind of intellectual coolness. Within minutes, the florals arrive. Not all at once, more like they're pushing through stone. The blossoms don't soften the mineral so much as complicate it. The heart phase is where it gets interesting: this stops reading like a fresh fragrance and starts reading like something else entirely. Green, alive, floral, but held at a distance by the mineral undercurrent. Then the florals begin to recede. What's left isn't empty, it's the mineral base, now warm from skin contact, carrying traces of petals that bloom and fade across it. The drydown settles into something quiet and lasting, the mineral holding the memory of the florals long after they've gone.
Cultural impact
As an artistic fragrance from a conceptual perfumery, A Marvellous Entanglement occupies territory far from mainstream niche. The mineral-floral pairing is genuinely uncommon, most mineral fragrances lean aquatic or ozonic, while florals tend toward sweetness and warmth. Wearers who connect with this tend to be those looking for something intellectual in their collection, a fragrance that functions as a statement of taste rather than a signature scent. The limited community engagement reflects the brand's position outside traditional fragrance culture rather than any failure of the work itself.
