The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Louise Turner created Willow & Amber for Jo Malone London's Wild Flowers & Weeds collection in 2019. The collection turns to untamed, unglamorized growth, plants that grow without permission, in hedgerows and along riverbanks. White willow fits perfectly: a tree that bends, that thrives near water, that has been quietly present in the English landscape for centuries without ever asking for attention. Amber adds the warmth the willow never asks for but sometimes receives, late in the day, when the light comes horizontal and gold. The name says everything. Two materials. One tension. The whole fragrance lives in that space.
What makes this composition work is restraint. Willow provides a green, slightly mineral freshness that could read as cold if left alone. The amber doesn't compete, it arrives softly, wrapping around the cashmere wood and vanilla in the base to create warmth that builds gradually rather than announces itself. Vetiver bridges the gap with its earthy, slightly smoky character, keeping everything grounded. The pink pepper in the opening provides just enough spice to prevent the whole thing from floating away. It's a fragrance that trusts the wearer to find the balance themselves, to let the willow and the amber have their conversation without steering it.
The evolution
The opening arrives clean and green. Vetiver and pink pepper introduce themselves with quiet confidence, not sharp, not loud, just present. Within minutes, the willow character emerges: fresh, almost aquatic, with a mineral quality that suggests bark and river water rather than flowers. This phase holds for the first hour, steady and unhurried. Then the amber begins to surface, rising through the cashmere wood like afternoon light through branches. The green doesn't disappear, it softens, becoming a memory rather than a statement. By the third hour, patchouli and vanilla anchor the base. The warmth is close to the skin now, intimate and lasting. On fabric, it holds longer, you might find traces the next morning, faint and pleasing, like the ghost of a good day.
Cultural impact
Willow & Amber sits comfortably within Jo Malone London's Wild Flowers & Weeds collection, a group that celebrates unglamorized growth and quiet presence. Limited edition status gives it a slight collector's appeal without the artificial scarcity tactics of niche houses. The fragrance doesn't try to reinvent the brand's language, it refines it, offering a green-warm tension that feels native to the house's identity. Wearers drawn to the Wild Flowers & Weeds line tend to value subtlety over statement, and this one delivers exactly that.
