The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Francis Kurkdjian created Cuir Bourbon in 2016 as part of Elie Saab's La Des Cuirs collection, a curated exploration of leather in its many forms. Bourbon vanilla entered the composition not as garnish but as foundation, bringing warmth that leather alone can't generate. Saffron provided the intrigue, a slight edge that stops the sweetness from becoming dessert. The result is a leather that feels both commanding and comfortable, present without being heavy. The suede accord adds a tactile softness, the kind that gives when you touch it, making this leather approachable in ways that traditional leather notes rarely achieve. Still commanding. Still present. Just comfortable in its own skin.
What makes Cuir Bourbon interesting is the note pairing. Bourbon vanilla and suede aren't obvious partners, one is rich and sweet, the other is dry and tactile. Kurkdjian bridges them with saffron, which has a warmth that pulls both toward something more complex. The musk anchors everything in an animalic direction without tipping into aggressive territory. The result feels intimate rather than loud, warm rather than hot. The vanilla's sweetness and the suede's texture create a balanced composition that feels both indulgent and restrained.
The evolution
The opening hits with a sharp-sweet contrast: saffron meets bourbon vanilla's richness. For the initial phase, there's tension, a slight sharpness that doesn't resolve so much as soften. The suede arrives gradually, wrapping around the vanilla and taming the sharper edges. As the composition settles, it moves into something warm and powdery, the leather-suede element now dominant but still soft. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Bourbon vanilla and suede become inseparable, with musk lending a skin-close animalic quality that lingers for hours. Sillage develops in a way that feels present without being intrusive, noticeable to those nearby but never overwhelming. On fabric, the vanilla can survive until the next day. This is a fragrance about warmth and intimacy, about the kind of scent that stays in a room after you leave it.
Cultural impact
Cuir Bourbon occupies a distinctive place in the Elie Saab lineup, offering a leather experience that differs from more traditional interpretations. The combination of bourbon vanilla and suede creates something unique within the house's portfolio, appealing to wearers who want warmth and presence without intensity. It speaks to those looking for a leather fragrance that feels refined and approachable rather than bold and aggressive.
