A house, in its own words
The Dirk Bikkembergs label traces its origins to 1989 when the Belgian designer launched his eponymous brand. Bikkembergs had previously studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp, where he became associated with the Antwerp Six, a group of avant-garde designers who gained international recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The collective, which also included figures like Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester, helped establish Antwerp as a significant center for contemporary fashion. After building his brand through the 1990s and 2000s, Bikkembergs sold a majority stake to Zeis Excelsa, an Italian fashion group, in 2011. The acquisition brought new resources to the label while maintaining its Belgian creative roots. For nearly three decades, the brand operated exclusively in apparel and accessories before announcing its entry into fragrance in 2016 with the launch of Dirk, a scent representing the brand's first foray into beauty products.
The Bikkembergs approach to fashion has consistently centered on the intersection of functionality and style. The designer described his aesthetic as sport couture, a term that captures his interest in athletic elements combined with formal construction. This philosophy manifested in garments that incorporated performance fabrics, structured tailoring, and an emphasis on movement and practicality. The brand's menswear particularly reflected this sensibility, offering pieces that read as both refined and dynamic. When the house eventually developed fragrance, this sport couture sensibility reportedly informed the scent direction. The decision to launch a fragrance represented a natural extension for a brand seeking to communicate its identity through multiple sensory channels. The house approached fragrance as another expression of its core aesthetic rather than a departure into unfamiliar territory.
