The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2014, Bond No. 9 commissioned perfumer Laurent Le Guernec to create an oil-based fragrance, a departure from the brand's typical concentrate format. The name Tola references an overlooked corner of the city, a place where rose-laden cafés sit beside weathered timber and the scent of oud might drift from a basement shop. Le Guernec drew from this sensory landscape, building a fragrance around rose and oud as the defining materials. The choice of an oil base reinforced the fragrance's raw, natural character, allowing the materials to speak without the polish that alcohol-based formulas sometimes impose.
The note structure reflects a philosophy of contrasts. Rose and oud share an earthy, grounded character that makes them natural partners, but they also carry opposing qualities. Rose is floral, slightly ephemeral, while oud is woody, almost permanent. Pairing them creates tension that tonka bean resolves without eliminating. The addition of musk as the drydown material completes the arc by stripping away the boldness and replacing it with something close and personal. The fragrance is designed to be noticed, then remembered.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with rose and oud, two materials that arrive together and establish an immediate presence. Rose offers its slightly spicy, herbaceous floral note while oud contributes its deep, dark woodiness with characteristic barnyard warmth. This opening is bold and unapologetic, designed to announce itself rather than whisper. The heart phase introduces tonka bean, whose sweet, vanillic warmth provides a counterweight to the opening's intensity. Tonka does not soften the fragrance so much as cushion it, creating a warm center that persists as the top notes begin to fade. The drydown transitions to musk as the dominant material, a clean animalic presence that fades to skin-close intimacy. The evolution moves from assertive opening through warm heart to intimate finish, each phase named and distinct.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 debut, Pure Tola Oil has caught the attention of fragrance enthusiasts, praised for its unapologetic oud-rose pairing that balances edge with elegance. Wearers often value its staying power, while its oil concentration makes it a favorite for those who prefer a more Intimate, long-lasting application.
