A house, in its own words
Bohdidharma was founded by Michael Boadi, a British perfumer who first gained recognition through Boadicea the Victorious, a house associated with opulent, statement-making fragrances, and later through Illuminum, where he worked on contemporary scents including those tied to the British Royal Warrant held by its parent company. Boadi launched Bohdidharma as his own creative vehicle, a more personal expression outside the commercial constraints of the houses he had previously been linked to. The brand entered the market via a launch event at Fenwick on New Bond Street in London, placing it firmly within the British luxury retail conversation from the outset. Bohdidharma Perfumes Limited is registered as a company in the United Kingdom, confirming its domestic origins and operational base. Rather than building gradually over decades, the house emerged from an established perfumer's desire to work with greater creative latitude, and its catalogue reflects that sense of a single artistic vision rather than a committee-led development process. Bohdidharma operates on the premise that niche perfumery should provoke as much as it should please. The brand leans into unusual ingredient pairings: lapsang souchong tea, camellia, sacred fig, pink lotus, saffron, tobacco flower, and orange pekoe tea all appear across the lineup, signalling an interest in smoky, botanical, and meditative accords rather than safe crowd-pleasers. Michael Boadi's background across both a heritage-leaning house like Boadicea the Victorious and a more accessible line like Illuminum gives the brand a dual sensibility: an understanding of structure and longevity married to a willingness to experiment. There is a clear through-line of Eastern and botanical references, with names like Sacred Fig, Imperial Saffron, and Pink Lotus suggesting a contemplative, almost ritualistic approach to scent. The philosophy appears to value individuality over mass appeal, and complexity over instant accessibility.
