Heritage
A house, in its own words
Mark Badgley and James Mischka launched their fashion label in 1988, establishing themselves as a design duo specializing in occasion wear and bridal collections. Both designers studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before attending fashion school together, eventually finding their way to New York where they built their label from the ground up. The partnership proved enduring, with both men maintaining creative control over the brand throughout its growth from a small design house to a global operation. Their ascent in fashion included prominent celebrity clientele and a reputation for intricate beadwork and feminine silhouettes that defined their aesthetic. The transition into fragrance came nearly two decades after their fashion launch, with the debut of Badgley Mischka in 2006. Robert Crames, who co-founded the company in 2007 alongside the designers, helped guide the beauty expansion that followed. The fragrance arm has continued to develop under Horizon Beauty Group, which partnered with Badgley Mischka to create an old Hollywood-inspired fragrance collection. This heritage in formal dressing informs the brand's approach to fragrance, where they aim to capture a sense of occasion and sophistication.
The Badgley Mischka approach to design centers on timelessness with modern sensibility, a philosophy that extends from their fashion work into their fragrance development. Mark Badgley and James Mischka have consistently described their design ethos as welcoming women across generations, creating pieces that feel relevant without chasing seasonal trends. This perspective shapes their fragrance philosophy as well, favoring compositions that maintain relevance over time rather than novelty. Their interest in Hollywood glamour as a recurring theme demonstrates their attraction to a certain kind of enduring elegance that transcends specific eras. The brand's fashion roots in evening wear and bridal inform their fragrance direction, which often emphasizes romance, femininity, and a sense of occasion. They reportedly approach each fragrance as an extension of the Badgley Mischka wardrobe, considering how a scent might complete a particular look or moment. This integration of fashion and fragrance reflects their broader belief that beauty comes through careful attention to detail and a commitment to craftsmanship.
