KV by Kateryna Vel'menko
Kateryna Vel'menko arrived at perfumery the long way around, and it shows in everything she makes. Born in Ukraine, she built a career in the corporate world before walking away to chase something she couldn't name yet. She spent years traveling, then trained and performed as a professional dancer, an education in discipline, physicality, and the architecture of movement that quietly informs her sense of structure. Somewhere along the way, fragrance stopped being background and became obsession. She studied perfumery seriously, apprenticed her nose, and let her accumulated worlds (Eastern European sensibility, Middle Eastern exposure, Italian training and base) ferment into a distinct creative vocabulary. In 2024 she launched KV Perfumes, a house built around her own formulations and selective collaborations with other perfumers she admires. The debut collection of 11 fragrances landed that same year, an unusually confident first statement for a new independent label. KV operates from Italy but refuses to behave like a regional brand. Vel'menko treats geography as raw material, not identity.

How KV composes
Vel'menko's work tends to lean warm, textured, and considered. She gravitates toward ingredients with presence: resins, ambers, spices that arrive with their own history attached. Her dancer's training shows up in how she builds composition, favoring pieces that move through distinct phases rather than dissolving into a single soft wash. She works in close dialogue with other perfumers, a habit that keeps her reaching for unusual combinations rather than settling into a signature comfort zone. Oud and amber-adjacent materials appear with some frequency, balanced against brighter fruits and greens when the structure calls for contrast. Her fragrances read as modern niche with an Eastern-rooted heart, confident in their weight, designed to be smelled on a living person rather than read off a strip. The result feels less like trend-chasing and more like a slowly assembled point of view.
Philosophy
What drives KV
Vel'menko talks about perfumery the way a dancer might talk about choreography: nothing is accidental, and every element has to earn its place. Her creative approach is collaborative without being dependent. She composes her own formulas, then opens the studio to other perfumers whose work she respects, letting dialogue push the house in directions she might not reach alone. She has spoken about wanting fragrances that feel like they belong to someone, that carry a human fingerprint rather than a corporate fingerprint. Cultural specificity matters to her. The textures she encountered in Ukraine, the Gulf, and Italy show up not as literal references but as underlying rhythms, a pull toward warmth, a comfort with density, an instinct for how scent and memory braid together. For Vel'menko, a perfume succeeds when it asks something of the wearer, when it refuses to disappear politely into the background.
