Gian Luca Perris
Gian Luca Perris grew up in Milan, the son of Michele Perris, who built a modest perfume house in the 1970s. Surrounded by raw materials, he learned the language of scent before entering the professional world in 1989. He refined his technique at several French maisons, absorbing the rigor of classic French perfumery while keeping an Italian instinct for drama. In 2022 he earned the title of nose for Houbigant’s Tonka Sublime, a fragrance that raised his profile among collectors. The same year he launched his own label, Perris Monte Carlo, a platform that lets him translate travel memories into scented narratives. Today he balances commissions for heritage houses with independent projects, guiding a small team that shares his respect for balance and storytelling.

How Gian composes
Perris builds his scents around a clear structural core. He often begins with a gourmand anchor - tonka bean, vanilla, or amber - and then introduces a contrasting mineral or green facet to prevent sweetness from overwhelming the composition. In his woody creations he favors cedar, sandalwood, and rare African rosewood, treating each as a subtle scaffold rather than a dominant theme. He applies a technique he calls ‘reverse layering’: the base note is blended first, then middle accords are woven in, and the top accords receive the final polish. This method lets the perfume evolve slowly on the skin, revealing hidden nuances hour by hour.
Philosophy
What drives Gian
Perris believes that fragrance acts as a bridge between memory and place. He gathers inspiration from a train ride across the Alps, a market in Marrakech, or a quiet evening in his family workshop. Each composition starts with a single accord that captures an emotion, then he layers complementary notes until the scent feels like a sealed moment. He values restraint; a single ingredient may dominate if it serves the story. Sustainability guides his sourcing, and he prefers natural extracts that retain their original character. Ultimately he aims to give the wearer a quiet confidence that recalls a personal vignette.
