A house, in its own words
Yvo Van Regteren Altena was born in 1958, and his relationship with perfume began remarkably early. Upon his sixth birthday, he discovered he possessed an exceptional sense of smell, a sensitivity that would shape his entire life's direction. His grandmother's house became his first laboratory of scent, where young Yvo began learning to distinguish and appreciate fragrances at an age when most children cannot yet articulate what they smell. This childhood connection evolved into a serious pursuit, eventually leading him to establish his own fragrance house. The journey from hobbyist to professional perfumer took considerable time. Yvo began the research and development phase for his debut fragrance in 2013, spending three years studying ingredients, compositions, and the art of natural perfumery before launching YVRA 1958 in 2016. The choice of 1958 as the debut fragrance name references his birth year, establishing a naming convention that would define the collection. Each subsequent fragrance carries a year significant to the founder, creating a personal chronology expressed through scent. This approach rejects the industry's standard practice of naming fragrances after qualities or emotions, instead grounding each creation in biographical specificity. The Amsterdam-based house operates independently, free from the constraints of larger corporate fragrance houses, allowing complete creative control over every formulation.
YVRA operates from a clear conviction about the current state of the fragrance industry. The brand views much of the mass market as dominated by synthetic aggressive scents, compositions designed to make an immediate impression before fading quickly. The house describes this approach as inducing hasty departures rather than passionate embraces. Their alternative philosophy centers on natural ingredients, taking the position that synthetic compounds often create fragrance experiences that lack depth and longevity. Rather than competing directly with commercial fragrances, YVRA positions itself for a different consumer entirely, one who prioritizes authenticity over immediacy. The brand rejects the idea that fragrance should function as a loud announcement upon entering a room. Instead, YVRA creates scents meant to be discovered, to reward proximity and sustained wearing. This philosophy manifests in the house's restrained marketing and limited collection, which never expands simply for the sake of variety. Each fragrance must justify its existence through distinct character and purpose. The collaborative approach with perfumers reflects a humility about the craft, acknowledging that no single formulator possesses all knowledge. YVRA selects perfumers based on specific project requirements rather than maintaining exclusive relationships, ensuring each fragrance receives the most appropriate creative expertise.
