Heritage
A house, in its own words
Bénédicte Foucart established Valeur Absolue after identifying what she perceived as a gap in the fragrance market: a need for perfumery that prioritized healthier formulations and more meaningful connections between scent and wearer. While the brand does not claim historical roots in the same vein as houses operating since the 18th century, Foucart drew inspiration from what she described as the roots of 17th century fine perfumery, suggesting an intent to reconnect with artisanal traditions. The earliest editions, including Sensualite, Harmonie, and Joie-Eclat, appeared in 2013. Subsequent years brought expansion, with Serenitude launching in 2014, followed by Vitalité and Confiance in 2015. Rouge Passion joined the collection in 2017, marking the last new addition according to available records. The brand has maintained its operations in southern France, with manufacturing based in Grasse, a town synonymous with fragrance production for centuries.
The philosophy underlying Valeur Absolue departs from mainstream fragrance creation by anchoring its approach in aromacology, the study of how aromas affect psychological and emotional states, and mineral therapy, which posits benefits from semi-precious stones. Rather than categorizing scents by traditional olfactive families, the brand organizes its collection around moods and emotional intentions. Sensualite addresses intimacy, Harmonie seeks balance, Joie-Eclat targets joy, Serenitude aspires to calm, Vitalité pursues energy, Confiance builds self-assurance, and Rouge Passion evokes passion. This framework positions the fragrance as a tool for emotional self-care rather than purely aesthetic expression. The stated commitment to organic-certified materials and vegan formulations reflects an ethical dimension, though specific certifications and their verification would require examination of current documentation.
