Heritage
A house, in its own words
Annie launched The Society of Alchemists in York with the intention of marrying mythic storytelling and olfactory art. While the exact launch year is not publicly documented, industry observers place the founding in the mid‑2010s. Early releases focused on an elemental series – Earth, Air, Water and Fire – each designed to capture the spirit of its namesake. By 2018 the brand opened a dedicated atelier in York, offering a tactile experience where customers could sample scents amid alchemical décor. The space quickly became a local curiosity, drawing both fragrance enthusiasts and tourists seeking an unconventional retail encounter. Over the following years the house expanded its narrative scope, introducing darker, character‑driven scents such as Vampire Kisses and Till Death. These later releases maintained the original philosophy of story‑first composition while experimenting with richer gourmand and woody accords. Throughout its evolution the brand has remained small‑scale, producing limited batches to preserve quality and narrative integrity. The Society of Alchemists continues to host workshops and seasonal events that invite participants to explore the alchemical process behind each bottle, reinforcing its reputation as a laboratory of scent and imagination. The brand’s creative vision rests on the belief that fragrance can function as a narrative device. Rather than positioning scent as a decorative accessory, The Society of Alchemists treats each perfume as a chapter in a larger mythic saga. This approach drives the selection of raw materials, which are chosen for the stories they can tell as much as for their aromatic qualities. The house emphasizes gender‑neutral storytelling, deliberately moving away from conventional “girly” packaging in favor of symbols drawn from alchemical manuscripts and folklore. Transparency and education also play a role; workshops and in‑store talks aim to demystify the blending process, allowing participants to see how synthetic and natural ingredients combine to form a cohesive tale. Sustainability is addressed through careful sourcing of botanicals from European farms that practice responsible cultivation, while synthetic notes are selected for their stability and reduced environmental impact. The overarching value system prioritizes imagination, craftsmanship, and a respectful relationship with both the material world and the stories it can convey.
