Heritage
A house, in its own words
The house traces its origins to 1999, when it was founded in Villefranche-sur-Mer, a coastal town on the French Riviera between Nice and Monaco, as a soap manufacturer operating under the direction of Mme Taïde. For more than two decades, the workshop focused on artisanal soapmaking, building a production culture grounded in the Mediterranean environment of the Côte d'Azur. The brand's name, Terres Dorées, translates to Golden Lands, a reference that evokes both the sun-warmed landscape of the Riviera and the amber-toned materials central to classical French perfumery. In 2023, the maison made its formal entry into fine fragrance, launching a debut collection of eaux de parfum. The transition from savon to scent represented a natural extension of the company's existing expertise in handling raw materials, particularly natural butters, plant oils, and aromatic essences. The Villefranche-sur-Mer roots remain a defining part of the house's identity, connecting it to a region long associated with artisan production and the broader Grasse perfumery tradition that spans the neighboring hinterland. Terres Dorées approaches perfumery as a continuation of its soapmaking heritage, treating scent and skincare as kindred crafts built on the same foundations of raw material knowledge and patient formulation. The maison's creative vision centers on producing compositions that feel grounded, wearable, and connected to a sense of place, drawing on the sensory landscape of the French Riviera that has shaped the brand since 1999. Rather than chasing trends or positioning itself within a crowded niche market, the house emphasizes a quiet, deliberate creative process. The naming choices across the debut collection, including Épicène (a French word suggesting something shared by both genders), Ingénue (evoking innocence and classical femininity), Byzance (calling to mind the opulence of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean), and Mysore (a nod to the Indian city long associated with sandalwood and sacred incense), reveal an intellectual curiosity about history, culture, and the symbolic power of fragrance names. The brand appears to value storytelling and evocation over spectacle, allowing each composition to carry its own narrative weight.
