The pyramid reads almost inverted from convention. Tonka bean sits as the opening note, leading from the first spray with that almond-vanilla richness usually associated with the later stages of a fragrance's life. It sets an expectation of sweetness that the leather deliberately breaks. The leather note arrives in the heart and carries itself without the usual scaffolding around it, which means what reaches skin is a cleaner, more direct reading of the material. There's no smoky accent to lean on, no birch tar bitterness to give it edge. Just leather, handled on its own terms.

The evolution

The first thirty minutes belong entirely to the tonka. It blooms warm and slightly powdery, closer to roasted almond than to the vanilla most people associate with the bean. There's a confectionery quality to the opening, the kind of sweetness that feels edible rather than perfumey. It settles quickly, giving way to the leather almost without a transition. The heart is where this fragrance earns its name. The leather arrives dry and structured, less like a jacket and more like the inside of a new wallet. Nothing animalic, nothing smoky. Just material. It holds this shape for two to three hours, the kind of linear performance that rewards close attention. Somewhere around the third hour, the cardamom starts to surface from below, bringing a green, almost peppery heat that cuts through the leather's smoothness. By hour five, the cardamom is the dominant voice. The tonka has faded to a ghost. The leather has relaxed into something softer, almost suede-like.
