Heritage
A house, in its own words
SJA Perfumes was established in 2015 in Abu Dhabi by Shatha Alzaabi, who set out to build an independent Emirati fragrance label rooted in local scent culture rather than imported Western tropes. The name SJA reflects the founder's initials, anchoring the brand firmly in personal authorship. Early releases, including Tobacco and Suyufi, arrived the same year the house was founded and signaled an early willingness to work with bold, smoky, and resinous materials associated with the Gulf. By 2020 the label had expanded into numbered, concept-led limited editions such as 11:11 and Danah, along with a winter collection that grouped together Tobacco, Taifi, Sufi, 11:11, and Al Shareef Oudh. The 2021 wave, including Empty Quarter, Yuzu, Vetiver Cigar, and Old School, broadened the catalog into drier, greener, and more tobacco-leaf territory while staying connected to the brand's incense and oud foundations. Coverage in Tatler has placed SJA within conversations around Emirati perfumery, reflecting its growing visibility beyond the local niche fragrance circuit. A 2025 release, Baqueur, extended the house's bakhoor-focused line and was singled out by independent reviewers as a notable incense-led composition of that year. SJA Perfumes operates from the premise that fragrance can act as a vehicle for cultural memory, connecting the wearer to specific landscapes, rituals, and moments in the Arab world. The founder's creative vision centers on translating Emirati heritage into wearable form, treating each composition less as a generic luxury good and more as a small narrative. Rather than chasing trends, the house leans into regionally specific materials such as bakhoor, oud, taif rose, and tobacco, while occasionally pivoting toward unexpected notes like yuzu or vetiver to keep the catalog from becoming monolithic. The limited-edition approach, visible in releases like 11:11 and the 2020 winter grouping, suggests an intention to treat fragrance as a series of distinct creative statements rather than an endless stream of variations on a house signature. This balance between rootedness and experimentation defines how the brand positions itself within the broader niche conversation.
