Heritage
A house, in its own words
Primark traces its roots to Dublin, Ireland, where Arthur Ryan opened the first Penneys store on Mary Street on June 13, 1969. Ryan, a former menswear buyer, envisioned a retailer that could deliver on-trend fashion at prices within reach of ordinary shoppers. The concept worked. Over the following decades, Penneys expanded steadily, eventually rebranding as Primark for international markets while keeping the Penneys name in Ireland. The company grew from a single Irish storefront into a multinational chain with hundreds of locations across Europe and beyond, all built on the same low-margin, high-volume formula. Fragrance entered the picture as a natural extension of the Primark beauty floor. The PS sub-label, the brand's own product range, became the primary vehicle for personal care and scent offerings. What began as simple body mists evolved into a more ambitious collection of eau de parfums and eau de toilettes, many designed to evoke the character of far pricier designer releases. The brand's fragrance arm has steadily gained traction on social media, with reviewers and beauty creators regularly highlighting bottles that smell reminiscent of luxury benchmarks, often at prices hovering around the five-pound mark. Primark's fragrance philosophy is rooted in democratization. The brand believes that smelling good should not require a luxury budget, and its scent range reflects that conviction. The PS fragrance line aims to capture the mood of high-end perfumery, offering compositions in floral, fruity, and warm categories, and making them available to anyone walking through a Primark store. What sets the brand apart in the crowded affordable fragrance space is its willingness to take creative risks. Rather than relying solely on safe, generic mass-market formulas, recent Primark releases have been noted for their ambition, drawing comparisons to niche and designer houses. The brand listens closely to online fragrance communities, adjusting its offerings based on what shoppers actually want rather than what industry gatekeepers suggest they should buy. This grassroots approach has earned Primark a genuine following among budget-conscious fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate finding quality compositions at accessible prices.
