Heritage
A house, in its own words
Paul Emilien grew up in the Cevennes region of France, where his father tended vineyards and his mother collected wild herbs. Born Paul Mathieu in 1966, he first pursued drawing and painting, exhibiting in local galleries before turning to scent as a new medium. In the early 2000s he apprenticed with independent labs in Grasse, learning the chemistry of natural extracts. By 2014 he launched his first fragrance line under the name Paul Emilien, debuting Pure Addiction, L'Esprit Divin, Souffle Intime and Une Belle Journee. The following year he introduced Chaleur Gitane, a tribute to the gypsy caravans that crossed his childhood landscape. 2016 marked a prolific period with six releases, including Vetiver Indien, Gardenia Tropical, Cuir Rustique, Musc Angelique, and two others that explored mineral and woody themes. In 2017 he added L'Ombre des Hommes, a composition that juxtaposes smoky incense with bright citrus. The brand remained a solo venture until 2020, when Paul Emilien partnered with the niche house BYBOZO to create the Sentry collection, blending his artistic approach with the label's modern aesthetic. Throughout its history the house has operated from a renovated atelier in Montpellier, where sketches for bottle graphics are still hand‑drawn by the founder. The evolution from painter to perfumer illustrates a consistent thread of visual storytelling, now expressed through olfactory art.
Paul Emilien treats fragrance as a canvas. He believes that scent can capture a moment as precisely as a brushstroke, so each composition begins with a personal memory or a visual scene. The house values authenticity over trend, choosing ingredients that convey genuine emotion rather than following market cycles. Sustainability informs his decisions; he prefers ingredients harvested with respect for biodiversity and works with suppliers who share that ethic. Collaboration is another pillar: while he creates the core accord, he invites artisans—glass blowers, graphic designers, and musicians—to contribute their perspective, ensuring that every release feels multidimensional. Transparency guides his communication; he lists key ingredients on the bottle and shares the inspiration behind each name in the accompanying booklet. This approach reflects a belief that the wearer should understand both the story and the material that compose the perfume.
