Heritage
A house, in its own words
Oilily traces its origins to 1963 in the Netherlands, when Willem and Marieke Olsthoorn established the brand with a clear creative vision centered on colorful, expressive design. The couple built Oilily into a lifestyle brand encompassing clothing, accessories, and eventually fragrance. Their approach drew from Dutch design traditions while embracing an international sensibility that resonated across European markets. In 1984, the brand established its own atelier dedicated to knitwear production, reflecting the hands-on, artisan ethos that continues to influence its creative direction. The fashion house maintained a distinctive visual language throughout its growth, characterized by vibrant patterns and hand-illustrated motifs that became synonymous with the Oilily identity. When the company entered perfumery in 2003, it carried this established visual language into a new category, creating scents that complemented its broader lifestyle offerings. The Olsthoorn family's commitment to maintaining production quality and design integrity shaped the brand's trajectory across multiple decades and product categories.
Oilily approaches fragrance as an extension of its broader design philosophy, treating each scent as a wearable expression of the brand's colorful identity rather than a purely technical exercise. The brand's fragrance creation process aligns with its fashion roots, emphasizing individuality, warmth, and a sense of personal expression. Rather than pursuing the dramatic, avant-garde positioning common in niche perfumery, Oilily has cultivated a signature style that balances accessibility with distinctiveness. The choice to enter the fragrance market in 2003 reflected the brand's desire to offer existing customers a complete sensory experience beyond clothing and accessories. Each fragrance release has maintained visual consistency with the broader brand aesthetic, creating a cohesive lifestyle offering that extends across product categories.
