A house, in its own words
The story of Nomenclature begins in 2015, when a group of independent perfumers and synthetic chemists convened in a modest workshop in Berlin to explore the artistic potential of newly patented aroma compounds. Their first public offering, Adr‑ett, arrived that same year and was noted for its transparent amber accord, a direct result of a laboratory‑synthesized iso‑eugenol variant. In 2016 the house released Lumen‑esce, a fragrance built around a luminous, photoluminescent molecule originally developed for industrial applications; the scent’s subtle metallic shimmer earned it a feature in a German design magazine. Two years later, Shi‑sõ (2017) introduced a rare marine‑derived aldehyde that had only recently become available to commercial perfumers, marking Nomenclature’s commitment to sourcing cutting‑edge ingredients. The 2019 releases psy‑cou and fluo‑ral each centered on coumarin analogues that exhibit a faint fluorescent glow under UV light, a novelty that attracted attention from both scent enthusiasts and visual artists. By 2022 the brand expanded its palette with Minted, Pink Ivory, and Neo Rose, three scents that each highlighted a distinct synthetic rose or mint molecule, demonstrating how a single note can be re‑imagined in multiple contexts. The most recent addition, Night Serum (2025), uses a nocturnal‑inspired indole derivative that releases a soft, animalic trail after dark, reinforcing the house’s reputation for time‑specific olfactory experiences. Throughout its decade‑long evolution, Nomenclature has remained a laboratory‑first operation, collaborating with university research departments and niche ingredient manufacturers to secure exclusive rights to molecules that have yet to enter the broader market. This approach has allowed the brand to maintain a steady stream of releases that feel both experimental and meticulously crafted, positioning it as a reference point for fragrance houses that wish to integrate scientific discovery into their creative process.
At the core of Nomenclature’s philosophy lies a belief that scent begins with chemistry, not with a pre‑conceived story. The founders argue that each molecule carries its own emotional fingerprint, and that the role of the perfumer is to translate that fingerprint into a wearable narrative. This perspective leads the house to prioritize transparency: every launch is accompanied by a brief technical note that explains the molecule’s origin, synthesis pathway, and sensory profile. Nomenclature also embraces sustainability by favoring synthetics that reduce reliance on endangered natural sources; many of its exclusive ingredients are produced in closed‑loop processes that minimize waste. The brand’s values include curiosity, rigor, and collaboration, reflected in its frequent partnerships with academic labs that publish joint papers on aroma chemistry. Rather than chasing trends, Nomenclature seeks to expand the olfactory vocabulary, encouraging consumers to develop a more nuanced appreciation for the building blocks of perfume. This educational stance is evident in the brand’s occasional workshops, where participants can smell raw aroma chemicals and learn how subtle structural changes alter perception. By treating fragrance as a living laboratory, Nomenclature hopes to inspire a new generation of scent makers who view perfumery as both an art and a science.
