The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Montblanc's Explorer line takes a different approach. Explorer Platinum arrives in 2023 with a straightforward proposition: what does a summit smell like when you're already there? Three perfumers, Bruno Jovanovic, Nathalie Lorson, and Fabrice Pellegrin, worked from that question rather than a conventional brief. The answer sits at the intersection of green freshness and woody warmth, a fragrance that opens like cold air and settles into something that feels both clean and grounded. The interplay between bright, crisp top notes and a deeper woody heart creates a scent that breathes rather than shouts, inviting you to linger in that moment of arrival without needing to announce it.
Violet leaf is an unusual choice for the top position. It's rarely the star, more often a supporting player adding texture to florals or greens. Here, it opens alone, delivering that unmistakable cool, slightly metallic green that reads as alpine air. Clary sage adds an herbal dimension that most people know from lavender's louder cousin, but clary sage is gentler, more diffuse, with a faintly sweet undercurrent that keeps the opening from feeling austere. Cedarwood anchors the base with a distinctly dry, almost powdery character, not the creamy cedar of cosmetics, but the sharp, pencil-shaving dryness of the real thing.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: violet leaf is crisp, almost cold, with a green bite that wakes you up. No sweetness here, no warmth yet. About fifteen minutes in, the clary sage arrives, softer, herbaceous, rounding the edges. The transition isn't dramatic; the violet leaf simply steps back as the sage steps forward, like a handoff between two guides on a trail. By the second hour, cedarwood takes over completely. It's dry and powdery, with none of the sweetness you might expect from wood. This is the summit moment, clean, clear, solitary. The drydown holds for hours, lingering close to the skin as a quiet, close whisper of cedar once it fades from prominence.
Cultural impact
The Explorer line positions Montblanc in the fresh-woody category. Explorer Platinum distinguishes itself through restraint: a three-note structure, clean execution. It's the kind of fragrance that doesn't announce itself, which makes it either exactly what you're looking for or not. A scent for those who want something that breathes rather than shouts, inviting discovery rather than demanding attention.
