Heritage
A house, in its own words
Michael Michalsky launched his self-titled fashion label in Berlin in 2006, establishing his base in one of Europe's most dynamic creative capitals. Prior to this, Michalsky held the position of creative director at MCM, a luxury handbag manufacturer, which gave him experience in building a lifestyle brand that extends beyond single product categories. In 2009, he founded the Michalsky designLab specifically to explore creative projects that fell outside the scope of his main label, including the eventual development of fragrance lines. The brand expanded systematically into perfumery in 2010 with the launch of Michalsky for Men and Michalsky for Women, marking a significant diversification of the MICHALSKY universe. The Urban Nomads collection followed in 2011, introducing a travel-inspired concept to the fragrance range. A subsequent generation of scents emerged around 2015 with the Michalsky Berlin line, named after the brand's home city. The Style collection launched in 2018 for both genders, representing another expansion of the core offerings. More recent releases include Iconic For Women in 2020 and Sunshine in 2021, demonstrating continued investment in the fragrance category over fifteen years since the debut collection. The label has maintained its Berlin identity throughout this growth, with the city serving as both literal and symbolic headquarters for all creative operations.
Michalsky approaches fragrance creation through the lens of his broader design philosophy, which prioritizes the intersection of urban style and timeless elegance. His background in fashion design informs a perspective that treats fragrance as an extension of personal style rather than a standalone artistic statement. The designLab structure enables experimental approaches to new product categories, including perfumery, allowing creative exploration without compromising the core brand identity. Berlin serves as a consistent source of inspiration and positioning, with the city's aesthetic culture influencing both the fashion and fragrance lines. Michalsky has described the creative potential across his label as extensive enough to warrant dedicated infrastructure for exploration and development. The fragrance collection reflects an understanding that consumers increasingly seek lifestyle brands that offer cohesive experiences across multiple categories. Rather than positioning scents as luxury statements, the approach emphasizes wearability and contemporary relevance, qualities that align with the broader MICHALSKY aesthetic of accessible, design-driven products.
