A house, in its own words
Matthew Williamson and Joseph Velosa established their eponymous fashion house in February 1997, launching with a debut collection that immediately caught industry attention. The early collections established Williamson's reputation for working with vivid color and intricate prints, creating pieces that stood apart from the more restrained London aesthetic of the era. By the mid-2000s, the brand had grown from its London base into an international presence with both ready-to-wear and accessories lines. The decision to enter fragrance came after roughly eight years of building the fashion business, representing a natural extension of the brand's lifestyle positioning. Williamson reportedly developed his fragrance concept during time spent at an exotic beach location, drawing inspiration from that sensory experience of sun, salt, and warmth. The 2005 debut fragrance launch at Harvey Nichols marked the first retail exclusive for the brand's fragrance line. Following the initial launch, the house expanded rapidly into multiple fragrance releases across 2007, introducing variations including Incense, Jasmine Sambac, Sheer, Lotus, and Warm Sand. This expansion reflected a strategy of offering different scent profiles while maintaining consistency in branding and positioning. The fragrance operations sit within Juniper Brand Development, which manages the brand's fragrance licensing and development. Williamson's approach to fragrance mirrors his work in fashion: he favors intensity and luminosity over subtlety. The brand philosophy centers on creating scents that announce presence rather than whisper quietly. His fashion collections have long explored themes of escapism, joy, and exotic travel, and the fragrances extend this same emotional territory. The designer has spoken about fragrance as an intimate form of self-expression, something that can transform mood and transport the wearer. Each fragrance in the collection targets a different facet of the Williamson aesthetic, from the warmth of Incense to the florals of Jasmine Sambac and the clean notes of Lotus. The philosophy treats fragrance as a finishing touch that completes an outfit, functioning as the final layer of a carefully considered personal presentation. Rather than following seasonal trends, the house positions its fragrances as enduring wardrobe staples available in varying concentrations.
