A house, in its own words
Kanchaveli was established by Bidzina Kanchaveli in Berlin, a city that has hosted an unusually high concentration of avant-garde perfume makers in recent years. The company's commercial registration is filed under Kanchaveli's own name in the Charlottenburg district, reinforcing the identity of brand and maker as a single entity. Before founding his eponymous atelier, Kanchaveli spent years working as a dramaturg, a background he has referenced repeatedly in interviews about his pivot to scent. According to a published conversation titled "In the beginning there was soap," he wrote and staged four original plays before turning to fragrance development, a sequence that explains the theatrical framing the house applies to its releases. The transition from page and stage to bottle was, by his own account, a continuation rather than a departure, with dramaturgy, aroma, and fragrance forming a single creative vocabulary. Earlier in his career, Kanchaveli was involved with Tom Klark's, a Berlin-based fragrance project known for its conceptual approach to niche perfumery. After that chapter concluded, he launched Kanchaveli as an independent venture under his own surname, keeping full creative control and tying each future release to his personal vision. The first two Kanchaveli editions, White and Yellow, arrived in 2025, and were quickly taken up by independent fragrance databases tracking niche launches. In 2026 the house expanded with a cycle of compositions named for raw human states, including Hate, Grief, Envy, and Fear. The rapid pace of releases, combined with the deliberately literary naming, has drawn the attention of fragrance press in Europe and beyond. Kanchaveli's stated goal is to travel through time using fragrance, to wander through human history and immerse himself in the lives of ancestors, a framing that recurs across his published writings and interviews. Rather than treating scent as a lifestyle accessory, the house approaches it as a vehicle for historical and emotional exploration, with each composition intended to open a passage into a particular moment, feeling, or state of being. The naming convention reflects this orientation. White and Yellow evoke elemental, almost abstract sensations, while the 2026 cycle rejects pleasantry entirely. Hate, Grief, Envy, and Fear name conditions most perfume houses would prefer to soften or reframe. By placing these titles on bottles, Kanchaveli makes the case that fragrance can hold uncomfortable truths without losing beauty, a position consistent with his dramaturgical background, where difficult subject matter is often treated as the most rewarding material. In his interview, Kanchaveli describes soap as his first point of contact with the world of scent, locating the origin of his practice in a simple domestic object rather than in any grand tradition. This grounding in the everyday keeps his conceptual ambitions anchored. The house operates less as a luxury brand projecting status and more as an atelier asking questions about how human experience can be translated into olfactory form. The philosophy is unmistakably personal: every perfume carries the mark of a single author who has moved between theater, writing, and scent and treats all three as one continuous inquiry.
