Heritage
A house, in its own words
Juniper Ridge traces its origins to 1998, when Hall Newbegin began selling small-batch, plant-based products at the Berkeley Farmers' Market. Newbegin, who describes himself as a plant nerd and wilderness enthusiast, built the brand from a simple premise: that scent could be captured directly from the wild landscapes of the western United States rather than approximated in a laboratory. The early years were hands-on and modest in scale, with Newbegin personally harvesting materials, distilling tinctures, and filling bottles for farmers' market customers curious about what a cologne made from California sage or redwood bark actually smelled like. From that Berkeley stall, Juniper Ridge grew into a dedicated fragrance house headquartered in Oakland, California. The company introduced its first Backpacker's Cologne formulas in the early 2010s, beginning with the Siskiyou and Caruthers Canyon editions in 2012, followed by Winter Redwood in 2013 and Topanga Canyon in 2014. These early releases established the template that still defines the line today: each fragrance is named for a specific trail, river, or canyon, and the sourcing is tied to that geography. In 2019, Juniper Ridge expanded its catalog with three new colognes, Coastal Pine, Desert Cedar, and White Sage, broadening the range of ecosystems represented in the collection. The brand's identity as a wild fragrance company grew out of this incremental, place-based approach, with each year adding new terrain to the map. Juniper Ridge's creative vision centers on the idea that fragrance should be an honest record of a specific place. Rather than building abstract compositions from a palette of synthetic aroma molecules, the brand sources raw botanical material from named locations in the American West and distills it into wearable form. Newbegin has framed the practice as a form of reverence for scent, treating the coastal, mountain, and desert ecosystems of California, Oregon, and beyond as the actual perfumer's organ. The brand's underlying values are rooted in wildcrafting, the practice of harvesting plant material in ways that respect local ecosystems and populations. Juniper Ridge has built its identity around transparency about where its ingredients come from, tying each fragrance to a documented landscape and season. This place-based approach shapes both the creative output and the way the brand communicates with its customers, who are invited to think of a Juniper Ridge cologne less as an abstract accessory and more as a portable impression of a particular trail, canyon, or coastline. The result is a perfumery practice that treats geography, ecology, and scent as a single, inseparable concern.
