The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jaeger-LeCoultre's collaboration with French perfumer Nicolas Bonneville gave rise to The Celestial Odyssey, a fragrance conceived as an olfactory tribute to celestial bodies. The composition draws its inspiration from the skyward themes that have long informed the Maison's most celebrated timepieces, those intricate mechanisms charting the moon and the sun and the stars above. Bonneville's approach was restrained in a way that feels almost architectural: a tight structure where every element earns its place. The patchouli grounds the wear with a darkness that reads like deep space itself, dense and unbroken, while the amberwood contributes a planetary warmth, that slow radiant glow of something burning at a distance.
The choice to anchor the entire composition in patchouli is the interesting move here. Patchouli is a material that carries strong opinions among fragrance wearers, and here it isn't softened with any bright citrus opening or lifted by a bouquet of florals or rounded out by a basket of gourmand sweetness. The composition moves directly into dark earth from the first spray, with patchouli taking the lead position in a way that feels almost editorial.
The evolution
Patchouli opens with that unmistakable green-soil density, the kind of dark earthy presence that announces itself immediately on skin. There's a damp mineral quality to the first moments, like wet earth after rain, with that slightly bitter edge that real patchouli carries before any sweetness develops. As the composition breathes, the amberwood begins to emerge, and the patchouli starts to lose its raw dampness, becoming smoother and more resinous. The amberwood contributes a warmth that sits underneath, never competing with the patchouli but cushioning it, pulling the whole composition toward something drier and more golden. Over time, the Tahitian vanilla takes its place, and the patchouli recedes into the background, becoming creamier and losing its mineral sharpness entirely.
Cultural impact
The Celestial Odyssey reflects a particular approach to luxury fragrance, one in which a Maison commissions a named perfumer rather than relying on celebrity branding or anonymous in-house development. The release credits Nicolas Bonneville as the creator, positioning the fragrance as an authored work rather than a marketing vehicle. The composition itself reflects this sensibility, built on three carefully chosen materials with no embellishment from citrus, florals, or sharp spices to lighten or distract. The result is a fragrance that reads closer to auteur perfumery than to the mass-market luxury launches that often dominate the category.
The House
Jaeger-LeCoultreJaeger-LeCoultre, the Swiss watchmaker founded in 1833 in the Vallée de Joux, stepped into fragrance in 2024 through its Made of Makers program. Partnering with French perfumer Nicolas Bonneville, the Maison released three olfactory signatures: The Timeless Stories, The Precision Pioneer, and The Celestial Odyssey. Each composition draws directly from the watchmaker's horological heritage, translating mechanisms, milestones, and celestial motifs into scent.
The Creator
Nicolas BonnevilleNicolas is passionate about natural raw materials, a devotion that has been inherent to him since childhood. He travels the world to follow harvests: India for jasmine sambac, Italy for mandarin and bergamot, Florence for iris, Tunisia for orange blossom.
