Heritage
A house, in its own words
Henrik Vibskov established himself as a central figure in Copenhagen's fashion scene before extending his creative reach into fragrance. His design practice encompasses clothing, accessories, and installations, reflecting a multidisciplinary sensibility that treats scent as another dimension of artistic expression. The fragrance line launched in 2011 with the Type trio (B, C, and D), establishing a framework of numbered compositions that would later expand across the collection. These inaugural fragrances laid the groundwork for an approach that treats each scent as a distinct artistic statement rather than a progression within a linear range. In 2016, the brand introduced two complementary fragrances, Lotus Dust Red and Cedar Root Black, expanding the collection with scents that explore contrasting olfactory territories. The 2023 releases of L'Eau Rouge Heirloom and L'Eau Rouge Nature marked a significant development, with the latter generating particular attention for its use of tomato notes as a central ingredient, a choice that positioned the fragrance among the more distinctive Scandinavian releases of recent years. Collaborations with other artists have also shaped the brand's trajectory, including a volume dedicated to Kenzo that connected Vibskov's practice to the legacy of the French luxury house founded by Kenzo Takada. The Copenhagen boutique serves as the primary retail environment, hosting fragrance launches alongside fashion presentations.
Vibskov approaches fragrance as an extension of his broader artistic vision, treating scent as a medium capable of conveying conceptual ideas rather than simply delivering pleasant aromas. His fragrances are described as genderless, reflecting a deliberate refusal to categorize scents by conventional market segments. The artistic character attributed to the collection suggests an emphasis on distinctive olfactory signatures over mainstream appeal. Each fragrance operates as an independent composition rather than part of a hierarchical range, allowing wearers to select based on personal preference rather than status considerations. The tomato note featured prominently in L'Eau Rouge Nature exemplifies this approach, choosing an ingredient rarely used as a focal point in perfumery to create a scent that surprises. This willingness to embrace unexpected materials and combinations defines the collection's character. The Discovery Set format further reinforces the brand's educational approach, presenting all six scents together to encourage exploration rather than directing customers toward a flagship product.
