The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Julian Bedel developed Oud Sándalo in 2018 as a personal response to the Patagonian woodlands his brand investigates through ethnobotanical research. Rather than constructing a fragrance from multiple layers, he chose to isolate two materials that he felt captured something essential about that landscape. The agarwood extract used here is a pure, unadorned form of the material, sourced through channels aligned with Fueguia 1833's botanical sourcing philosophy. The sandalwood comes from the brand's own distillation line, keeping the supply chain anchored to the same research-driven ethos that defines the house. Bedel's intent was to create something that felt native to the landscape that inspired it, using materials that could speak for themselves without elaborate staging.
Bedel's decision to center the fragrance on just two materials reflects a philosophy of restraint that runs through the Fueguia 1833 ethos. The brand's work with Patagonian botanicals has long emphasized the idea that a single material, handled well, contains more complexity than a dozen materials assembled carelessly. With Oud Sándalo, the pairing of oud and sandalwood is not incidental. Sandalwood's creamy warmth softens the angular resinousness of oud, while oud's depth prevents the sandalwood from becoming merely pleasant. Tog ether they reach a territory neither could reach alone. The fragrance does not try to be more than what it is, and that restraint is its strongest statement.
The evolution
The arc of Oud Sándalo resists the conventional narrative arc. It opens immediately on its heart, with sandalwood and oud presenting tog ether as if there were no separation between top and core. The first phase establishes a warm, resinous presence where oud's dark character sits beneath a creamy sandalwood sweetness. As the fragrance moves into its middle phase, the two materials deepen their interplay, the sandalwood becoming more buttery and the oud asserting its resinous weight. The drydown does not introduce new information but allows the sandalwood to soften into the skin while the oud lingers as a quiet, almost invisible warmth. This is a vertical structure rather than a horizontal one, defined by depth rather than by the introduction of new elements.
Cultural impact
Among niche oud enthusiasts, Oud Sándalo is praised for its unflinching wood focus, often cited as a benchmark for pure agarwood work. Wearers note its ability to command attention in Intimate settings without overwhelming, making it a quiet staple for collectors who value authenticity over flash.
