Heritage
A house, in its own words
Frederic Fekkai's path to founding Bastide spans continents and decades of experience in the luxury beauty industry. Born and raised in Aix en Provence, Fekkai absorbed the aesthetic sensibilities of the region from childhood, learning to appreciate the interplay of light, color, and fragrance that characterizes the Provencal landscape. His formal training took place in Paris, where he refined his craft among the city's legendary salons and developed the refined approach that would later define his career. The dapper Frenchman opened his namesake salon in New York City, which became the foundation of a beauty empire spanning haircare, styling, and salon services. For nearly thirty years, the Frederic Fekkai brand operated as a symbol of luxury hair care, eventually attracting the attention of Procter & Gamble, which acquired the brand and its salon network. In 2015, Fekkai Brands, LLC reacquired the business from Procter & Gamble, effective June 30 of that year, marking a significant milestone in Fekkai's continued stewardship of his namesake label. The transition to founding Bastide represented both a new chapter and a return to roots for Fekkai, who had long sought to bottle the essence of his Provencal upbringing. Partnering with his wife Shirin von Wulffen, Fekkai channeled his accumulated expertise into creating a brand that distilled the spirit of a bastide, the traditional manor houses of his homeland, into a complete sensory experience. The Bastide philosophy centers on the belief that beauty should evoke a specific time and place, transforming everyday rituals into journeys. Fekkai and von Wulffen designed the brand concept around using Provence as its organizing principle, drawing inspiration from the region's architectural heritage, natural landscapes, and way of life. A bastide, as defined by the brand itself, represents a traditional manor house with terracotta-colored stone walls found in the countryside of Provence, embodying warmth, authenticity, and a connection to the land. This architectural concept translates into a design philosophy that prizes natural materials, warm tones, and the kind of quiet sophistication associated with French country living. The brand rejects fleeting trends in favor of enduring pleasures, creating products meant to be savored rather than consumed quickly. Fragrance composition follows this same ethos, favoring harmonious blends that suggest the layered complexity of a Mediterranean afternoon rather than single-note impressions. The philosophy extends to the brand's approach to partnership, with the FEKKAI FIVE ambassador collective representing a curated group of creative voices aligned with the brand's vision. Fekkai has spoken openly about the importance of motivation and sustained inspiration throughout a career, values that manifest in the consistency and thoughtfulness of the Bastide collection.
