Francesco Smalto was born in Calabria, Italy, in November 1930. His family relocated to Paris in 1976 reportedly to escape political instability in their home region. The tailoring house, which some sources date to 1962, built its reputation on bespoke menswear that blended Italian craftsmanship with Parisian sophistication. The transition from tailoring to fragrance followed a natural progression for a house centered on personal expression and individual distinction. The 1987 launch of Francesco Smalto pour Homme marked the brand's entry into the fragrance market, carrying the slogan "Un Parfum A Votre Mesure," which translates to "A Perfume Made to Your Measure." This positioning reflected the house's tailoring origins, positioning fragrance as a personal statement rather than a mass-market product. The fragrance division expanded through the 1990s and 2000s with flankers and new releases including Molto Smalto (1993), the eponymous Smalto (1998), and Fullchoke (2004), which later spawned a women's version. Parlux, an American fragrance company, later acquired the brand's fragrance interests from the original French entity and shifted production to the United States. The tailoring house in Paris reportedly continues under separate ownership and management.
