Heritage
A house, in its own words
Fort & Manlé emerged around 2015 from the creative vision of Rasei Fort, a perfumer who taught himself the craft rather than attending formal fragrance school. The house operates as a completely independent venture, wholly owned and operated by Fort himself, without external investment or corporate backing. This independence has allowed Fort to pursue an uncompromising creative direction, releasing fragrances on his own timeline and following his own instincts rather than market trends. The brand takes its name from a fusion of surnames, Fort and Manlé, reflecting a partnership or personal significance behind the project. Early releases like Mr. Bojnokopopff's Purple Hat and Confessions of a Garden Gnome established the house's penchant for playful nomenclature and unconventional scent combinations. By 2016, the house had gained notable traction with releases including Fatih Sultan Mehmed and Amber Absolutely, the latter becoming a signature scent for the brand. The years that followed brought steady output, with fragrances like Süleyman Le Magnifique in 2017 and Forty Thieves in 2018 expanding the house's repertoire. In 2025, Fort & Manlé marked its tenth anniversary with the re-release of Charlatan in extrait de parfum concentration, signaling a return to an early composition beloved by collectors. The anniversary moment represented a rare retrospective gesture from a house that typically moves forward rather than revisiting past work.
Fort & Manlé approaches perfumery as a form of storytelling, where each fragrance embodies a concept, character, or cultural reference rather than simply delivering pleasant aroma. The house resists the pressure to chase trends or produce crowd-pleasing mass appeal scents, instead embracing compositions that may provoke, surprise, or divide opinion. Rasei Fort has described the brand's philosophy as centered on creating fragrances that feel fully realized and intentional, rather than formulaic or derivative. The eclectic nature of the catalog reflects a creator who draws from diverse influences, including Ottoman history, Mediterranean botanicals, and personal imagination. This unpredictability has become a defining characteristic, drawing collectors who seek out the brand specifically for its refusal to play it safe. The house does not adhere to seasonal release schedules or marketing-driven launches, instead releasing new work when Fort feels a composition is complete. This patient, creator-led approach means each fragrance arrives with a sense of conviction rather than commercial calculation.
