The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sacred Tobacco is Extra Virgo's latest work from Michele Marin, launched in 2022. The name is not decorative. Tobacco, in cultures across the new world, was never merely a commodity, it was a sacred plant, burned in rituals of cleansing, carried in pipes as offerings, and smoked as a gesture of peace and union between communities and the divine. That weight of meaning sits at the center of this fragrance, not as history but as atmosphere. Marin built the composition around two natural tobacco absolutes: Virginia blond, aromatic and luminous, and a darker Criollo variety typically reserved for cigar wrapper, richer and more full-bodied.
What makes Sacred Tobacco unusual is not any single material but the combination and the proportions. Two natural tobacco absolutes, Virginia blond and the darker Criollo variety, rarely appear together at this concentration in modern perfumery. Most tobacco fragrances use one as a dominant note and build around it. Here, both are featured prominently, creating a fragrance where the bright, aromatic lift of the blond plays against the deep, resinous weight of the darker absolute.
The evolution
The opening does not ease in gently. Antique birch tar arrives first, sharp, smoky, slightly medicinal, followed immediately by the Indonesian clove and Sri Lanka cinnamon. Castoreum gives it an almost leathery, animalic impression from the very start, as if the fragrance has already been wearing itself for hours. There is no citrus, no freshness to soften the arrival. This is a dark entrance. As the initial notes begin to settle, the two tobacco absolutes take their turn. Virginia blond brings a honeyed, aromatic brightness that cuts through the smoke without fighting it. The darker absolute adds weight, a dark sweetness that deepens the impression of warmth. Together they create the dark honey the brand describes, present and tangible, not metaphorical.
Cultural impact
Sacred Tobacco appeared in 2022 as part of the Forbidden Botanica collection. Its limited availability has added to its appeal among collectors who value rarity and intention over commercial availability. The combination of two natural tobacco absolutes, antique birch tar, and a full dose of vintage civet and castoreum makes it stand apart from more conventional tobacco fragrances. Wearers describe it as a fragrance that reveals itself slowly, rewarding patience with a complexity that unfolds over hours rather than minutes.
