Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Dr. Vranjes Firenze begins not with perfume, but with pharmacy. In 1984, Paolo Vranjes and Anna Maria established the Antica Officina del Farmacista in Via San Gallo, Florence, a neighborhood historically associated with herbal medicine and apothecary traditions. Paolo Vranjes brought scientific credentials as both a chemist and pharmacist, training that would shape his methodical approach to fragrance creation. The original business focused on cosmetics and spa treatments before shifting toward scented products. By 1983, the couple had formalized their fragrance house, drawing on four decades of expertise in natural essences. The timing aligned with renewed interest in Italian craftsmanship and artisanal products, though the brand maintained a low profile for many years, building reputation through product quality rather than marketing. Dr. Vranjes remained personally involved in formulation throughout the decades, a continuity that became a defining characteristic of the house. The 40th anniversary in 2023 prompted broader international attention, coinciding with the Bangkok store opening. Corporate ownership by L'Occitane Group brought capital for expansion while attempting to preserve the founder's continued involvement in creative direction. The acquisition of Integra Fragrances, announced in collaboration with The L'Occitane Group, signaled ambitions toward vertical integration in fragrance production.
The Dr. Vranjes Firenze approach to fragrance rests on the intersection of scientific knowledge and artisanal skill. Paolo Vranjes, trained in chemistry and pharmacy, treats fragrance formulation as a discipline requiring precision and understanding of raw materials at a molecular level. This foundation contrasts with purely intuitive approaches to perfumery, instead favoring systematic study of how natural essences interact and evolve. The brand does not separate its home fragrance philosophy from its knowledge of therapeutic and cosmetic applications, drawing on the apothecary heritage established in Via San Gallo. Natural materials feature prominently in formulations, though the house acknowledges the role of synthetic materials in achieving consistency and certain olfactory effects. The decision to keep Dr. Vranjes involved in product design reflects a belief that continuity of vision matters for a fragrance house. The brand positions itself within the tradition of Florentine perfumery, acknowledging Florence's historical role in developing fragrance as an art form rather than claiming to have invented or revolutionized the practice. Collections release on a measured timeline, with notable launches including Rosa Tabacco in 2022, Meriggiare in 2025, and Mattutino in 2025, suggesting deliberate curation over rapid expansion.
