Heritage
A house, in its own words
Mark Sage, a self-taught perfumer and artist based in New York City, founded Clandestine Laboratories in January 2010 after developing what he describes as an accidental obsession with fragrance. What began as personal curiosity evolved into a dedicated practice of creating scents that reject conventional perfume industry standards. Rather than pursuing mainstream distribution, Sage built the brand through referrals and organic growth, positioning it as an underground auteur house where each fragrance functions as an artistic statement. The name itself reflects this positioning, suggesting hidden knowledge and clandestine expertise operating outside mainstream channels. Over the years, the brand has released approximately a dozen fragrances, with notable works including Assam (2012), which established early recognition for the house, and The Boy (2022), a more recent expression of Sage's evolving aesthetic. In 2024, the house introduced Covert, continuing its tradition of releasing scents that resist easy categorization. Sage has described his longtime dream as creating an underground auteur brand based entirely on word of mouth and referrals from people who wear and love his work. This philosophy has shaped every aspect of the brand's development, from formulation choices to distribution strategy.
Clandestine Laboratories operates on the principle that fragrance should function as a form of personal expression rather than commercial product. Sage treats perfumery as an art form, approaching each fragrance as a composition that communicates specific emotional and sensory ideas. The brand's unofficial tagline, world domination through subtly addictive fragrances, encapsulates this vision: the goal is not mass appeal but rather the creation of scents that become integral to their wearers' identities. This auteur approach means Sage maintains complete creative control over every aspect of production, from initial concept through final formulation. The philosophy rejects the香水 industry standard of targeting broad demographics, instead embracing a niche position that serves enthusiasts seeking something beyond conventional options. Community engagement plays a central role, with the brand cultivating relationships with customers who appreciate its experimental nature and handmade quality. This approach attracts fragrance collectors and connoisseurs who value artistic vision over marketing budgets. The brand operates without an in-house perfumer in the traditional sense, with Sage serving as both creator and producer, ensuring consistency between creative intention and final product.
